Medical School Application Timeline—When Do Decisions Come Out?

It may seem that the medical school application timeline is simply a collection of information about where, how, and when to complete the necessary requirements. However, it’s a crucial part of the admissions process, and misunderstanding it can make it more difficult to gain admission to your desired program.

One common question students ask is “when do medical schools start?”, so we will cover that in detail below.

Understanding the Medical School Application Timeline

The U.S. medical school application process lasts more than a year. You begin in the spring (about 15 months before the academic year starts) by submitting your primary application (AMCAS/AACOMAS/TMDSAS), then write essays in mid-summer, and interview from late summer through winter.

The medical school application timeline:

  • Spring (May/June)—AMCAS and similar systems open.
  • Summer (July/August)—You complete school-specific secondary applications and essays.
  • Fall/Winter—Interview season.
  • Spring (starting year)—Schools release final decisions and manage waitlists.

Same of U.S. medical schools have rolling admissions, meaning spots are filled as applications are reviewed. But even if the final deadline is in December, submitting an application in October can significantly reduce your chances, as many interview invitations may already have been sent.

When Are Primary Applications Due for Med School?

In the U.S., the deadline for your primary application depends on whether you’re applying through AMCAS, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS. However, the most important rule is that the official deadline is almost never the date you should aim to apply by.

For example, due to the rolling admissions process, the later you submit your application, the fewer seats remain available.

When are primary applications due for med school?

  • May—work on your application and collect recommendation letters.
  • June—submit your application (best within the first two weeks).
  • July/August—write your secondary essays.
  • September—interview season begins.

When Are Med School Applications Due for CMU vs. US Schools?

Admission differences can significantly impact your preparation to become a doctor in the U.S.

In the traditional U.S. system, the process can take over a year. It follows a strict timeline—spring applications, summer essays, and fall and winter interviews. Despite rolling admissions, the system creates a race against time—late application drastically reduces your chances. And a rejection means losing a whole year, as cycles occur once every 12 months.

Our model works very differently. It’s faster, more flexible, and designed around you.

With CMU’s trimester system, you can start your studies in:

  • January.
  • May.
  • September.

This means the entire process—from submitting documents to stepping into the classroom—can be completed in just a few months, making it at least twice as fast as in the U.S.

This flexibility helps candidates worldwide avoid the stress of strict deadlines and unnecessary gap years. If you miss one intake, another is just four months away, so you don’t need to put your plans on hold for a full year.

When Do Medical Schools Start?

Our Caribbean Medical University offers flexible start dates, allowing applicants to begin their studies at the time that is most convenient for them.

Since many of our students come from outside the United States, we’ve made the admissions process more accessible, so if an application isn’t successful, there’s no need to wait a full year to apply again.

Flexible Start Dates at CMU: January, May, and September

CMU semesters start in winter, spring, and fall:

  • January—the beginning of the academic year for most students
  • May—for applicants needing extra time to get their documents in order
  • September—for those who prefer a standard start schedule

This flexible system is especially helpful for international students, giving them more time to organize their move, visas, and other administrative requirements.
